Ostróda-Elbląg Channel

or most people, a boat cruise of the “white fleet” is the only way to see the greatest tourist attraction of Ostróda and Western Mazury, the Ostróda-Elbląg Channel, the most interesting technically, a unique in the world water channel. It is composed of three main parts of the joint length 129,8km and of many side arms. The channel was designed by a Dutch engineer Georg Jakob Steenke and was completed in 1848-1872. The greatest technical problem was the 99 meter difference in water levels between Drużno lake near Elbląg, and Piniewo lake at the distance of 11km. Steenke elaborated an unusually original conception which functions to this day in an unchanged form, astonishing the visitors with its artistry of 19th century engineering. The brilliant solution to the problem was to build in the channel two water-locks (Miłomłyn and Zielona) and five sloping shipways (Buczyniec, Kąty, Oleśnica, Jelenie and Całuny). The ships are going through the shipways on special carriages. Certainly, just as 100 years ago it is today, with the exception that in this channel the ships sail on the grass. It is a must-see attraction. The detailed offer can be obtained at the port of the Ostróda-Elbląg Fleet, at the shore of Drwęckie Lake in Ostróda, where the summer tourist information is.

Do you know that: The Ostróda-Elbląg Fleet is a part of the Town’s Communication Works in Ostróda and the offer of the channel boat cruises received a special prize and a certificate of Polish Tourist Organisation in 2004.
